On August 2nd, we will once again participate in Bright Beginnings, and program of the YMCA of Richmond.  We will have the opportunity to meet a student from a local public elementary school and will share dinner with them and then assist them to shop for back-to-school clothes and shoes at the Target store on Midlothian Turnpike.  If you would like more information on how you can help with Bright Beginnings click here.

reading bus

School may be out for the summer, but WHES is launching an exciting new effort to encourage summer reading.  Westover will have a Summer Reading Bus that will travel to three of the school’s neighborhoods (Midlothian Village, Somerset Glen, and Westover Hills) every Tuesday evening, 4-7 pm, June 28-August 2.  It is a chance for students, siblings, and parents to interact with WHES staff and school volunteers.  “Reading Riders” on the bus will be responsible for book check out/in, interacting in meaningful “book talk” with students, and distributing books.  Please consider helping out even if you can only sign up for one or two evenings.  It’s so important to keep our students reading throughout the summer so they are ready to come back to school this fall.

Besides teachers and staff, there will be five volunteers on the bus.  I hope you’ll sign up and encourage a friend or two to sign up with you.
