PLAYGROUND RENOVATIONS

UPDATE - INFORMATION - DONATION

Playground Update

UPDATE 5/9/12

We are almost there!  We have raised $34,000 of the $50,000 needed to completely renovate the Westover Hills tot lot!  If you have young children, be sure to sign up for our next fundraiser - Stylists from the salon Cut, Curl, or Dye in Virginia Beach have volunteered to do haircuts for kids in the Westover Hills Tot Lot on Sunday, June 3rd from 2-6 p.m.  All donations for haircuts will go to the renovation of the Tot Lot. Get your time slot now by going to: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/30E0945AEA82AA31-haircuts/3487964. Thanks for your help with the playground renovation!

We are on our way!  The playground fund has grown to nearly $33,000.  The most wonderful news is that the Westover Hills Neighborhood Association has voted to donate and outright figt of $1000, plus a $5000 matching gift.  That means that if residents of Westover Hills give $5000, the Association will also give $5000.  So far, residents have given over $4,000, so we are confident that we will receive the entire matching gift.  In addition, we have received a $500 pledge from Kathy Graziano’s office from funds designated for community projects, and have received a positive response from the Westover Hills Merchants Association and from the Forest Hill Neighborhood Association, though the amount of the donations from those organizations has yet to be determined.  Also, in early January, True Timber pruned our large shade tree free of charge.  We are so grateful to them, as they have pledged to provide this service at no charge for the next five years.   Stay tuned!  Final plans for the actual playground equipment and more fundraising opportunities are coming!  We are still hoping for a spring re-dedication of the playground that has been a wonderful place for the children and families of this neighborhood for many years.

PLAYGROUND  INFORMATION

The playground on the corner of Boulevard and New Kent has been enjoyed by children from the Westover Hills neighborhood and beyond for many years. The equipment at the playground is nearing the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. Westover Hills United Methodist Church, along with the Westover Hills Neighborhood Association’s Playground Committee, has been working together on the playground improvement plan.

The wooden equipment at the playground will be replaced with state-of-the art aluminum pieces set in concrete, including a large multi-use “jungle gym” with two slides and a climbing rock, a “train” apparatus to replace the fire truck, swings and a couple of smaller pieces. The new equipment will be longer-lasting than the current wooden pieces and will meet all current safety standards.  The current sandbox would be rebuilt, and 12 inches of child-friendly mulch would be installed in the play area, leaving the rest of the park sandy to allow for Push toys and picnic tables. The installation of the new equipment is planned for the early spring of 2012, depending upon the success of the fundraising effort.

The church is dedicating proceeds from its “Pumpkin Patch” to the playground renovations this year, and the WHNA has already pledged $1,000 toward the effort. The total cost of the renovated playground will be $50,000.   The church would be ever so grateful to those in the community who would help us by donating funds for the cause.

Thank you for helping us to re-build one of the best children’s playgrounds in the city! If you have questions or concerns, please email the church office, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
