FREE, BEGINNER TAI CHI CLASS/PRACTICE GROUP

AGE:  You have to be at least 16 years old

CLASS SIZE: 12 to 15

WHEN:        January 15, through March 6, 2020 Wednesdays and Fridays

9:30 am to 10:30 am.    8 Weeks/16 Sessions

THE YANG 24 SHORT FORM: This class will focus on the most popular tai chi form in the world, the Yang 24, Short Form which is likely to be the style of tai chi that you see people doing in the park.  It was created in 1956 by the People’s Republic of China and has been avidly promoted as the standard exercise program for Chinese people of all ages. It reduces the traditional Yang long form (over 100 movements) down to 24 postures so that it takes only about seven minutes to perform while keeping the essential elements of Tai Chi and retaining its traditional flavor.

Our goals will be to learn the movements; to work on our balance and breath and to calm ourselves down a bit; Mindfulness, meditation mind-body awareness stuff.  Hopefully, after this initial class we can continue and maybe become a tai chi practice/interest group and maybe explore tai chi’s underlying principles and a few other tai chi forms.  Less couch sitting, more moving and breathing in our lives.

COST: No cost though you are encouraged to donate can goods to the Westover Hills United Methodist Church’s Food Bank/Pantry.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:  None; And you don’t have to be coordinated or athletic—Just about anyone can do it.  Sometimes folks with balance problems can do these exercises seated on a chair.

EQUIPMENT:  Loose-fitting clothes; We stay on our feet, so no yoga mats.
